Good oral hygiene is one of the most effective ways of preventing long term dental problems and cleaning teeth properly prevents tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath and stops more serious problems such as tooth loss.
We encourage our patients to floss every day and recommend hygiene appointments every six months to remove plaque and calculus from behind the gum line and back teeth, areas which are difficult to reach.
By looking after your gums you’re looking after your general health
Did you know there’s a proven link between gum disease and your overall wellness? If you regularly see a hygienist to help look after your gums you can reduce the risk of diabetes, stroke, heart disease and even Alzheimer’s.
What is plaque?
Plaque is a sticky, colourless deposit of bacteria that is constantly forming on the tooth surface and it can trap stains on the teeth. It begins forming on teeth a few hours after brushing, which is why we advise people to brush at least twice a day and floss daily.
When plaque is left it turns into calculus, a crusty deposit that creates a strong bond that can only be removed by a dental professional. People vary in their susceptibility to plaque and calculus but it is common for these deposits to build up faster with older age and they are the primary factor in gum problems.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is present in 83 per cent of adults and gets more common with older age; it is the biggest cause of tooth loss in over-40s. Symptoms include bleeding gums, gums that have come away from the teeth, persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth, and teeth that are loose or changing position.
How we can help
Dental hygienists use tooth scaling to remove plaque and physically scrape away calculus to prevent cavities, gingivitis and gum disease, and they polish the teeth to leave them feeling smooth.
Regular hygiene appointments reduce your risk of gum disease and tooth loss because even with a good tooth brushing technique, most people miss parts of their mouth. Book a hygiene appointment at Tewkesbury Dental today.
